- David, your way to music has been started a long time ago... You was seven years when your mother gave you KISS CD, isn’t it?DAVID: Yeah, I was even younger. I think I got my first drum when I was three, piano lessons at five, trumpet at seven and electric guitar – nine or ten...
- When you started your way as a singer?DAVID: I don’t know because I always sang. Even when I played guitar in most of my bands, I was singer as well. It came natural, because my father is musician. So, he also played on trumpet, piano and sung. I’ve never thought about it until I decided to really focus on sing. That was later.
- Is your father a jazz musician?DAVID: Yes...
- Maybe you have brought something to Andromeda’s music from jazz as well?DAVID: I think so, because I borrow some from jazz music and black music... I listen a lot of blues and soul. I’m a vocal trainer as well. I find that many people have a very hard time to get the soul into things; in a western start of music it’s really strict often... I think, I’ve brought a little of elements into our music.
- Johan, can you tell me about your musical way?JOHAN: I was played guitar when I was nine. I haven’t really play other instruments as David has, so I mainly play guitar. Then I was at the local music school and then I took lessons until I was seventeen for teaching guitar myself. I learned some stuff from the lessons, but I think especially as many rock musicians. They teach themselves for most parts by listening records and coping all stuffs. So, a lot of times I did my homework for play other stuffs instead. But then I’ve started play in bands, play cover and I’ve been started writing all material. So the playing bands was most useful experience really, over then at school.
- Do you guys play together around 9 years?JOHAN: About 10 years...
DAVID: 9 with me, I think...
JOHAN: It wasn’t really a complete band for a line without David. Yeas, about 9 years.
- Your 6th album “The Immunity Zone”, that has been available in USA, Japan and France for several months, is released at 27th February in Europe. How many songs “The Immunity Zone” has?JOHAN: 9 as usual. :-) It’s not a plan, just for some reason turned out for this way...
DAVID: We don’t fit anymore in CD. :-) It’s about 65 minutes of music...
JOHAN: Actually, I think we have both of them - as longest song as shortest song on this CD. There is a song for 4 minutes and a 17-minutes song... So, we have a good mix, I think. In different moods and styles – you can’t get boring.
- Who is the album cover artist?DAVID: It was from Martin, our keyboard player... Martin’s sister (Maria Hedin) is a painter. So, she has done the great artwork.
- Do you have any guest musicians on your last album? DAVID: No, we haven’t.
JOHAN: Yeah, but maybe would be cool to have some guest musicians sometime… This is good idea actually...
- We can see that Danish and Swedish musicians often play together in Bands in Denmark. But not the same in Sweden...DAVID: Sweden is a bigger country. So, maybe there are musicians everywhere... :-)
- Do you have any contacts with bands here in Malmoe?
DAVID: I know “Act”. :-)
JOHAN: Yeah... I don’t really know any bands from here. I think a lot of bands here, I just don’t know about them. But it’s not so much Metal or Progressive...
- There are tons of famous bands from Sweden... Like Opeth, Evergrey etc. It must be quite difficult to find your own way... How to stay original?JOHAN: Yes, that’s always hard. It’s hard to give an explanation really also. I think have to keep open mind to the different kinds of music. I guess anyway everything you write is can come from someone... A little bit of necessary bring it from your filters and it comes hopefully on original way. And more sources – I guess, there is a chance to be different. I guess also have to be talented to do your own special way. That’s very hard too... I think our first album is not original as the other albums, which have more songwriters. More people, who writing music, also help to make it original, I think.
DAVID: We try a different ways for writing songs... That’s a good thing.
JOHAN: The songs from our two last albums were pretty much written by me, David or Martin. We haven’t really written music together as a band for a long-long time – not since 2001 actually. But from “Chimera” to right now we gonna try to write a songs more collectively, because it has become to be style. So, now we try to write together more like a group again. I think our next album - after “The Immunity Zone” - gonna be different...
DAVID: We always writing of the next album... :-)
- What kind of music you listen in your daily life?DAVID: I really Porcupine Tree at the moment, I listen a lot of different stuff... depends from the mood.
JOHAN: Actually I’ve been listened a lot of different albums lately... I’ve been listening some Muse and Dark Angel albums, Queen and a lot of different stuff. Also depends of the mood.
- What is your opinion about fans growth from the beginning of your band until now?JOHAN: I think it’s about the same maybe... But maybe more, because there are some bands become really big and experimental – not so mainstream, like Opeth which is very progressive and which becoming really big or Porcupine Tree... But in general I think it’s basically underground... It’s pretty small growth actually...
- You have not too much gigs... :- (DAVID: No...
JOHAN: Unfortunately. We like to play more alive.
- What was your impression from Russian gig at February 2008?
JOHAN: It was great. We have been expected 50-100 people, but it was a lot more. We were really pleased. Many people sung with the lyrics... So, it was a big surprise. Really cool!
DAVID: We had a great time. We can see some places in Moscow as well. It was nice!
- What are your future plans?DAVID: We hope to get a proper tour together for this album, and we are probably going back to play one or two shows in Russia during the year.
- Looking forward to hear your new CD! Hope to see Andromeda in Russia again soon! :-)
